Notes: An ROC-A is required by operators of radiotelephone equipment on board aircraft and at aeronautical land (fixed and mobile) radio stations using aeronautical mobile frequencies.
At this time in Canada, it's a special exception for RPAS pilots to engage in direct communication with Air Traffic Services via hand-held radio (or similar), however, there are many instances where radio communications are necessary to improve safety and best practices while avoiding conflicts with other aircraft.
► Within Class G airports near aerodrome circuit patterns (within 5 miles)
► Pilot-to-pilot communications on Aerodrome Traffic Frequencies or en-route frequencies
► Within controlled airspace (by request or approval of ATS management)
► Within Class F Special Use Airspace (ie. practice/RPAS test-range)
► Emergency situations in ANY airspace
Students should diligently study the following guide prior to taking the course or exam. ROC-A Study Guide ROC-A training and examination .
In addition to RPAS Training Course (Link here) , Learning to talk on an Aeronautical Radio station professionally and to an aviation standard is advisable for drone pilots operating in Canada.
The ability to understand proper aeronautical radio communications will help the RPAS operator maintain critical situational awareness as we will show. This will improve safety.
